Fishing stretches and places

FISHING AREA
Upper French Broad
Smaller, scenic reaches above Asheville offer a mix of bass fishing and paddle-friendly water when flows are suitable.

FISHING AREA
Asheville reach
A broad urban reach with easy gauge context, riverfront access and mixed warmwater fishing.
FISHING AREA
Marshall to Hot Springs
The river becomes more confined and energetic as it enters steep mountain terrain; flow matters greatly for both anglers and paddlers.
Before you fish
  • Check North Carolina and Tennessee regulations for the reach you plan to fish.
  • The Asheville gauge is especially useful because it reports streamflow, stage and additional water-quality measurements.
BOATING & PADDLING

On the water

The French Broad is one of the Southeast’s best examples of a river where live flow data directly changes the trip. Much of the North Carolina state trail is gentle, but the Barnard-to-Hot Springs reach includes Class III–IV whitewater.
